Mahindra seems to have gained new design expertise just before its Pininfarina acquisition.
The Indian company that acquired Italian design firm Pininfarina has published a design sketch of its upcoming XUV Aero concept car. The vehicle will be publicly unveiled next month during the Auto Expo 2016, India’s bi-annual event dedicated to the automotive world.
The new concept car from Mahindra looks better than its previous concepts, but the involvement of the Italian designers from Pininfarina is nonexistent.
We know the implication of the Pininfarina design house is almost absent because it takes an experienced automotive designer a few months to sketch and make a concept car, and the controlling stake that Mahindra purchased in the Italian company was only acquired last month.
However, the Pininfarina acquisition should produce its first sketches and resulting concept cars in the following months. If everything goes well, Mahindra could get many good looking cars on the road.
The new XAV Aero Coupe concept is probably based on Mahindra’s front-wheel-drive monocoque platform, Indian Autos Blog reports. We do know that the exhibit is outlined by a local Mahindra team, and that it promises a “bold design” that will be copied on the concept car.
The concept car announced by Mahindra could eventually lead to a production vehicle. After all, the company is not going for awareness, but for making new cars to sell.
A quick look at Mahindra’s sketch reveals an SUV with sporty styling. The car has excessively flared wheel arches, a steep roof profile, and features aggressive angles. We are intrigued by the look of the rear hatch door, which seems to be the opposite of sleek. The shape of the tail lights reminds us of the Ford Mustang while the roofline looks a bit like the one on the BMW X6.
As most design sketches go, this shows an exaggerated view of the future concept car, which might not continue to the New Delhi exhibit in this exact form. We do expect Mahindra to keep the roofline and the side window line, along with a nice bit of flare for the wheel arches.
