Maserati is looking to axe the GranCabrio as the company wants to come up with a more sporty GranTurismo in 2018 and continue the work it started with the new Ghibli and Quattroporte.
According to Maserati, the convertible market is not dynamic enough to support the existence of a future GranCabrio, despite the fact that the drop top model enjoyed its fair share of popularity in the United States.
Therefore, the Italians will focus only on the new 2018 Maserati GranTurismo, which will share its underpinnings with the new Ghibli and Quattroporte. “The future of Maserati has already begun with Ghibli and Quattroporte. Everything between now and 2018 will tap this DNA,” explained Harald Wester, Maserati CEO.
However, there’s a catch. While the aforementioned Ghibli and Quattroporte models offer four-wheel drive, the GranTurismo will be a rear-wheel drive only car. Moreover, the future model is described as being completely focused on the driver as well as “nimble, agile, responsive” thanks to a V8 engine that will also deliver generous amounts of torque at low rpm.
There are also rumors regarding what kind of power the V8 will be able to provide and reports are suggesting that a twin-turbo layout is being prepared, along with a 3.8-liter displacement. This could eventually lead to a power output of 560+ HP enough to make the engine roar like an alpha male lion during mating season.
The GranCabrio will also want to ‘thank’ the new Alfieri for going extinct, as Maserati will offer a convertible version in 2017, after the Alfieri will have made its debut in 2016. But for now, all we have to do is take in all these rumors, filter them out and see what will turn out to be true in the end.
