Though it may not be viewed by the general public as a household name in the compact crossover segment, the Mazda CX-5 SUV is celebrating a huge production milestone these days. Believe it or not, Mazda made a million of these things since production started in November 2011 at the carmaker’s plant in Hiroshima.
Presently assembled in Japan, Malaysia (Kedah), Russia (Vladivostok), Vietnam (Nui Thanh district) and China (Nanjing), CX-5 production surpassed a million units at the end of April 2015. Three years and five months passed, making the CX-5 the second fastest Mazda nameplate to reach the one millionth mark following the Mazda3 compact hatchback and sedan.
The first model of the Japanese automaker to feature the Mazda SkyActiv array of powertrain technologies and Kodo - Soul of Motion design language, the CX-5 started production at the Mazda Ujina Plant in Japan.
After initial production efforts, Mazda expanded CX-5 manufacturing to include Changan Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd. in China, Mazda Sollers Manufacturing Rus in Russia, Mazda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia and Vina Mazda Automobile Manufacturing in Vietnam.
"I am delighted to see the CX-5 reach the one-million-unit mark in only three years and five months," said Masashi Otsuka, the Mazda CX-5 program manager.
"I would like to express my gratitude to the people all over the world who have appreciated and supported the CX-5. We are committed to continue enhancing this model into the future to ensure that it remains a popular choice among people with active lifestyles, and will appeal to even more customers in the future."
