Mercedes-AMG Sedan Could Show Up in the Future

Mercedes surprised everyone when it decided to revamp itself and introduced a couple of changes to its marketing strategy. They created three brands out of the core Mercedes-Benz nomenclature, respectively Mercedes-Maybach, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Benz.

The Mercedes-AMG branch is the most exciting one, by far. It’s basically the old AMG division with a different name and one standalone model: the AMG GT. That’s about to change as the branch’s chairman, Tobias Moers revealed that a standalone sedan could also come out in the near future, wearing the same badge.

Of course, he didn’t go into specifics but this would definitely be a peculiar move considering that most people are claiming the traditional sedan is dead. How come? Well, a plethora of car makers out there are dropping research for conventional cars like sedans/saloons and focusing on other segments.

The most obvious example is Mitsubishi that officially announced that it won’t be investing in the Lancer anymore, preferring to focus on SUVs instead. And the sales figures show they are right.

SUVs are on the rise, in all shapes and sizes. Overlooking this segment would be a terrible mistake and could deem some manufacturers bankrupt. However, here we are, discussing how Mercedes is planning to launch a full-on, standalone AMG sedan.

The statement was given to the guys from Motoring.com.au and was more a denial of the rumors that they were working on a four-door AMG GT version.

"We could have a stand-alone four-door sports car that isn't shared with Mercedes-Benz. We could. Using a GT platform is not feasible for that, though. From the space frame concept, everything we need in a car like a four-door is not feasible,” Moers said.

"There will come a family out of the GT. That's what I've always said. Other variants will come and not just the Black Series,” he added.

That means that the technology is there, but it depends on whether the car would sell if they are actually going to make it. Given the proper specs, we reckon it would be a hit.

That’s because Mercedes wouldn’t be alone in the higher tiers of performance sedans where the Hellcat Charger, Alpina B5 and new CTS-V are currently playing. Furthermore, for the right price (like Dodge’s) the car would be a hit. Don’t expect a sedan Mercedes-AMG to be cheap though...
