Mercedes Bumps CLA-Class Base Price to $31,500 in America

When Mercedes-Benz launched the CLA-Class model back in early 2013, we learned two things. The first was that Kate Upton looks really good in car commercials, the other being that this was the only Mercedes you could buy for $29,900 (plus destination).

Good luck actually buying one that cheaply, especially when dealers charged at least $1,000 extra just because they could. But buying a cheap Merc was still theoretically possible.

Not any more though, because Mercedes-Benz USA is making headlines today with a sneaky price bump they made without an official announcement. Their official website now says the "entirely new seductive style at an even more interesting price" is $31,500. Add the destination charge and that quickly jumps to $32,425.

As far as we can tell, the CLA-Class hasn't added any extra equipment. So this move is likely the result of huge demand. The company's factory in Hungary is said to be unable to keep up with demand coming in from across the world, as the CLA is shaping up to be the best idea Mercedes ever had.

A 5% price bump is huge, especially considering Audi's equally new A3 sedan still starts at $29,900. Sure, you only get a 170 hp 1.8 turbo, compared to the 2-liter in the Merc. But do you really buy an entry-level German car for the power?

And once the options are added, the price rises very quickly for the CLA. All-wheel-drive costs an extra $2,000, for example, while metallic paint is $700. The CLA 45 AMG also has a price increase for 2015, starting at $49,425, which is $1,050 more than in 2014. Look for Mercedes to make a fortune on every model it sells right about… now.
