The fuel-efficiency watchdog of the US, the Environmental Protection Agency, took the new MINI hardtop models for a spin and wasn’t satisfied with what it found. As it turns out, the results they got were not perfectly on par with the ones the manufacturer claimed.
As a result, the EPA ordered a new set of tests that would be performed by the BMW Group under their supervision while they would also test the new cars at their own facility.
After the testing was done, the agency ordered MINI to change the labels on their cars to adjust the mpg ratings accordingly. The discrepancies though were minimal.
On most models combined and city ratings went down by around 1 mpg while highway ratings were dropped by 1 to 4 mpg on average. Therefore, the new ratings are now as follows:
BMW immediately complied to the requests coming in from the EPA and said “While this necessitates change, the 2014 MINI Hardtop still delivers outstanding fuel efficiency. We have sent new labels for 2014 models in stock to our dealers.”
At the same time, the Bavarians aren’t the only ones caught in offside by the EPA. This year alone, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia and Ford had to also undergo similar operations when the agency found discrepancies with their cars as well, forcing them to address the issues in a similar fashion.

- 2014 MINI Cooper Hardtop automatic: 28 mpg city/39 mpg highway (8.4 / 6 l/100 km)
- 2014 MINI Cooper S Hardtop automatic: 26 mpg city/35 mpg highway ( 9 / 6.7 l/100 km)
