The 44th edition of the Tokyo Motor Show will see Mitsubishi unveil a fully-electric concept car in the shape of a funky-looking compact SUV.
Officially called the Mitsubishi eX Concept, the tiny crossover will apparently sport Mitsubishi's next-generation electric vehicle technologies, although the Japanese carmaker hasn't yet revealed any specific details about the drivetrain.
Speaking of technical details, Mitsubishi released just about none at the time of this writing, beyond the fact that the eX electric SUV would feature a new take on the “Dynamic Shield” front design, along a “vast range of other technologies for superior driving pleasure in a compact crossover package.”
Not entirely expected, the concept does feature all-wheel-drive, and judging by the available images, it seems to be about the same size as a Nissan Juke. This fact alone makes it a pretty serious contender for hitting the production line in a couple of years, especially since we're currently experiencing an SUV and electric vehicle sales boom.
It will obviously all come down to how the public will digest the eX in the flesh in Tokyo, but there is a pretty high chance that Mitsubishi also wants a piece of the compact crossover pie.
Still, now that the Lancer Evolution X is out of the picture, Mitsubishi's new focus on crossovers and electric vehicle technology will probably alienate some of its fans, who were used to see rally-bred sports cars or hardcore off-roaders from the company.
Along the electric crossover concept, Mitsubishi will also bring a model chassis for the Outlander PHEV, which will showcase how its Twin Motor 4WD system works. There will also be a virtual community georama that uses Car-to-X systems, which deliver electricity from the Outlander PHEV's battery to other external uses.
The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show will open its doors to the public on October 30, with journalists getting to experience the premieres one day earlier.
