More Powerful 2015 Mercedes-AMG A45 S Prototype Fires Up Its Engine

Camouflage covers both the front and the rear of the car, which indicates some serious cosmetic changes will be made. These updates have been timed to coincide with the arrival of the A-Class mid-life facelift.

We think that underneath the camouflage, the new A45 AMG will be made to look a bit like the C63 S, especially at the front. More carbon fiber aero components are also going to be attached.

When launched, the 2-liter turbo engine used by the A45 made it the most powerful car in its segment. While it's still quite power-dense, the 360 PS mill is now a tad short of Audi's RS3 beast, which uses a bigger 2.5-liter with 367 PS.

Mercedes' answer will be to squeeze somewhere around 380 PS out of its first-ever inline-4 AMG powerplant. With all four wheels locked in a battle for grip, we can expect the benchmark sprint to 100 km/h to be dealt with in 4.4 seconds.

Rumor has it the new model will be called A45 AMG S and may cost just shy of €60,000. Considering a serious bit of kit like the BMW M3 starts at about €70,000, we think that's an absurdly high price. But having the fastest hot hatch in the world seems to be a matter of pride for Mercedes-Benz.

According to our insider intel, we'll get to see all the camouflage come off in August, just before the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
