There's a lot of chatter going on around the future of Volkswagen's SUV lineup. Rumors suggest there will be a Golf-based SUV in a couple of years and the company has officially announced production of a mid-sized crossover in America some time in 2016. But for us, there's only one VW 4x4 that matters right now, and that's the second-generation Tiguan.
The model dropped off our radar a few month ago, after the summer testing sessions were completed. The Tiguan prototypes should reappear soon in Scandinavia, but while we wait for that to happen, let's talk about the latest rumors in the mill.
Dealers in various corners of the world have been told to expect the Tiguan 2 to be officially shown in September during the Frankfurt Motor Show, the biggest event of the 2015. The market launch will take place shortly after that, starting with Germany in November.
The Tiguan will of course be based on the MQB platform, just like the Golf and Passat. That will help it shed up to 80 kilograms, (170 lbs), also giving it access to some of the best small engines currently on the market, not to mention driver assist tech.
The design is expected to be similar to the two preview concepts already shown by Volkswagen, namely last year's CrossBlue and the Cross Coupe GTI from the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. It should be close to what we see in the renderings created by Remco M. Proportionally, the Tiguan will remain about 4.5 meters in length, but its width will be significantly increased to match the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
According to what we've heard, the Tiguan 2 will be offered with engines ranging from 125 hp to 240 hp. The base unit will be a 1.4 TSI available exclusively with front-wheel drive. The top-end model will probably have a twin-turbo 2.0 TDI pushing 240 hp to all four wheels, just like the Passat. However, there will also be a 220 hp petrol version (210-hp rating in America), using the same engine as the Golf GTI.
