Ever since a Land Rover concept called DC100 was unveiled three years ago, the rumor mill steadily churned out a number of more or less official launch dates for the heavily-anticipated all-new Defender. This time around, a report says the next-gen Defender will arrive in the summer of 2016 as a concept vehicle.
According to a recent report published by AutoCar, JLR marketing director Phil Popham suggested that the new Defender will pack the most capability a Land Rover-branded vehicle has ever boasted up to this moment. In addition to that, design chief Gerry McGovern previously hinted that the new Land Rover Defender "will be more desirable to look at."

So yes, prepare to say goodbye to the rough and boxy lines of the current model and expect a lot of styling cues previewed back in 2011 by the DC100 (Defender Concept 100) pictured in the photo above.

McGovern knows what he's talking about considering the man also penned the DC100 Concept

At the present moment it's believed than the basic design of the 2018 Land Rover Defender received the green light from the higher-ups, but it's mum's guess whether the PLA aluminum platform that's underpinning the Range Rover will be adopted by the new-gen Defender as well. As for the oily bits, powertrain options will be more revolutionary than evolutionary if our intuition is bang on the money.

The current Defender will be phased out next year due to EU6 emissions regulations, so it's very likely that its successor will adopt the brand spanking new Ingenium family of engines. That means it'll be propelled by highly efficient but powerful 2-liter petrol and diesels that are aided by turbocharging. The estimated launch date for the 2018 Land Rover Defender is late 2017.

Just like on the recently launched Jaguar XE, the Ingenium family of engines will certainly be teamed up with a six-speed manual as standard, with an eight or nine-speed automatic transmission to be offered as an optional extra. Now imagine JLR giving the range-topping next-gen Defender the same blown 3-liter V6 as the one that powers the Jaguar F-Type V6… Yep, it may be wishful thinking, but it's a good idea.
