New Scuderia Ferrari D50 Cronograph Pays Tribute to Classic Single-Seater

As part of the Fall/Winter 2014 watch collection, Ferrari has recently unveiled their D50 family, whose name pays tribute to the single-seater that brought the Driver’s World Championship to Maranello in 1956. The distinctively thin case features fluidly elongated lugs and a glare-reducing domed crystal, popular in wrist watches from that era.

Its 50’s stop-watch inspiration shows in the minute track dial with double-digit Arabic numerals. A red “rev counter” track segment offers the classic racing feel, while a silver-toned Racing Shield logo adds a touch of subtle sophistication. The new model features red pusher accents and twin subdials positioned side by side at 3 and 9 o’clock.

The exclusive timepiece’s straps come with either vintage-look leathers with contrast stitching, or sporty black leather with a narrow, off-centered red stripe that also runs through the dial. Ferrari’s newest watch was designed as a true collectable that evokes the style and speed of the Italian’s race cars from the 50s.

Lancia D50

As to the actual car, the Lancia D50 was a Formula One racing car designed by Vittorio Jano for Lancia in 1954. The car’s design made use of many innovative features, such as the use of the engine as a stressed chassis member, the off-centre positioning of the engine to allow a lower overall height, and pannier fuel cells for better weight distribution and aerodynamics. Six of the cars were built, while two of them are displayed in Italian museums.

The new timepiece is available at Ferrari's store and is priced at $374 (EUR295).
