Nissan is forced to recall around 76k 2014MY Rogues in the United States. The cause? Faulty fuel pumps.
Nissan will recall 76,242 units of the 2014 Rogue (the American version of the X-Trail) due to a faulty fuel pump, says a report filed by the NHTSA.
On some of the affected vehicles, the nickel plating material from the fuel pump's inner or outer casing may detach. That can be caused by fuel flow, vibration or pressure. Once detached, particles might fall and block the impeller, causing it to stop rotating.
The issue must be fixed as quickly as possible because if it occurs during engine start-up, the pump will not function and starting the engine would become impossible. However, there's a chance of particles blocking the impeller while the fuel pump is operating.
In this case, the engine could stop running but, fortunately, the 12V power remains on and the airbag system stays functional. The report claims the vehicle can be stopped in safe and controlled conditions, but the risk of a crash is still present.
The problem affects models produced between June 11, 2013 and June 7, 2014, and it is worth mentioning that Bosch provided the fuel pump module supplier.
In order to fix the problem, Nissan will notify owners of the affected vehicles to take their cars to a Nissan dealer. As it usually happens in this type of situations, the faulty fuel pump will be replaced at no cost to the owner. The first phase of the recall will start this April.
