Nissan Leaf US Sales Reach 75,000 Milestone

Last week we saw the Nissan Leaf cruising down Holland’s glow-in-the-dark highway and now we find out that Nissan just sold 75,000 Leaf electric vehicles in the United States. The planets must have alligned in some way, don't you think?

No matther the cause, the 75,000th Nissan Leaf sold in the United States went to a Portland, Oregon customer who’s no stranger to Nissan’s EV. That’s because Rishabh Mehandru previously leased his first Nissan Leaf two years ago, when his eco-friendly conscience turned on an let him know something must be done about the emission he was putting in the air.

We will take that for granted, since the fresh Nissan Leaf owner who works for Intel as a senior engineer is a runner and found out at his own expense what polluted air does to the environment. He also has a daily 30-mile commute from home to work so buying a Nissan Leaf turned out to be his best compromise.

I’m a runner, and when I ran outside I fount that I was inhaling a lot of exhaust from the gas-powered cars that passed me on the roads. I instantly became aware of the amount of fuel I was burning, and that’s when I first decided that I wanted to get an electric car,” explained Mehandru.

The 75,000 sales benchmark recently hit by Nissan shouldn’t surprise anyone since in 2014 alone, the Japanese carmaker saw sales increase by 34 percent to a total of 30,200 units. Nevertheless, Chevrolet is right behind Nissan as the Volt plug-in is also close to securing the same sales volume.

The starting price of a Nissan Leaf is about $22,000 after the available maximum $7,500 federal tax credit. Last month, Nissan started a partnership with Georgia Power in an attempt to make EV charging available at several workplaces in Atlanta, where the market for sales of the Leaf EV is the largest in the United States.
