Olympian Swimmer Michael Phelps Pleads Guilty for DUI, Gets Probation

When you’re the most decorated Olympian of all time with a total of 22 medals, there is one thing you most likely do not want to do: mess it up. But American Michael Phelps did just that this September, when he had a couple of drinks and decided it is safe enough to take a drive. He got very close to ruining his entire career.

As we previously reported, Michael Phelps was traveling through the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland when he got pulled over by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. Officers claimed the 29-year old swimmer was speeding at 84 mph (135km/h) in a 45 mph (72km/h) zone. He was arrested for driving under the influence, excessive speeding and crossing double lanes.

Then, after he said he was sorry on his Facebook account, he checked himself into rehab.

The Olympian showed up to a Baltimore court Friday morning where he pled guilty to the charges he was accused of. Phelps was given a one-year suspended sentence and 18 months probation. In other words, if Phelps messes up in the next 18 months, he goes to jail for one year.

Baltimore Bullet, how fans like to call him, has a lot at stake here considering his huge winning records. The sportsman holds the all-time record for Olympic gold medals. He is the long course world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley, as well as the former long course world record holder in the 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley.

Since he spent most of his life building all this, we can only hope Phelps will be careful while driving, especially for the next 18 months…
