Opel Mokka Registers 300,000 Sales, Becomes 3rd Best Seller after Corsa and Astra

Fiat is just about to enter the crossover segment with its 500X, but we think it will discover Opel’s model firmly established there, especially with customers in Central Europe. The German blitz brand has just announced it has registered 300,000 total orders, an impressive result considering this is a brand new nameplate.

The last 100,000 sales were registered in the last seven month of this year. Opel says that in August, this was the best selling car in its segment and is currently their third most demanded car. Only the Corsa and Astra managed to sell more, but the Mokka is currently a better performer than the Insignia mid-size and Zafira MPV.

The Mokka has been in production since 2012 and shares many components with the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax, the three being considered sister models. Originally built in GM Korea’s Bupyeong factory, the Mokka was shifter over to Zaragoza, Spain, due to higher than expected demand.

“The Mokka interprets our definition of an exciting model with ultra-modern technology at affordable prices perfectly,” said Peter Christian Küspert, Vice President Sales & Aftersales Opel Group. “We are delighted with our bestseller amongst the compact SUVs. It is a guarantee for success and an important part of our model offensive. Next, it will be available with the 1.6 CDTI whisper diesel. That will definitely give the Mokka even more momentum.”

The engine in question is a 136 horsepower one that’s also available on the Astra. The 1.6 produces 136 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, up 6 hp and 20 Nm, respectively.

Although never officially mentioned in the latest press statement, we have a sneaking suspicion that the “It’s a German” marketing campaign featuring brand ambassador Claudia Schiffer has something to dow with the sales. It's clever and has raised awareness of a car very few people cared about before. In any case, it’s part of the fastest growing car segment in the world, one which doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon.
