Ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Audi has revealed a limited edition model called the R8 competition. Only 60 will ever be made and we can give you one very good reason to order one right now: this is the most powerful Audi production vehicle ever made.
It's heart is a 5.2-liter V10 engine that beats to the same 570 horsepower tune as the LMX, the one with laser headlights. That means only 20 horsepower separates the R8 competition from the R V10 Plus. However, that makes a world of difference.
While the Plus runs to 60 in 3.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 197 mph (317 km/h), Audi says the R8 competition needs 3.2 seconds to reach 60 and hits 199 mph (320 km/h). How subtle is that difference?!
In that time, Audi has had the time to sharpen a blunt-looking coupe into a pointy sportscar that everybody knows and loves. The R8 competition is likely the swan song of the current generation, played just as a new model is about to come out.
The guys at quattro literally threw everything at this limited edition model. A number of carbon fiber components have been added to the car, including a front spoiler, bumper flics, side blades, mirror caps, a rear diffuser and a huge rear wing. The package also includes a new exhaust system and black alloy wheels sitting atop standard ceramic brake disks and red brake calipers.
As for the interior, well that's where things really get interesting. When you order the R8 competition, Audi allows you to "pair a variety of interior and exterior colors" and also "choose from a selection of wheel finishes for a striking look designed to meet driver needs and tastes." Basically, the sky is the limit, which is amazing for a company that never made a supercar before.

The swan song of the Mk1 R8
The current generation of the R8 has been with us for quite some time. Production started in June 2007 and by August this year, Audi has made a whopping 54,600 examples, which is about four times more than the Lamborghini Gallardo. In that time, Audi has had the time to sharpen a blunt-looking coupe into a pointy sportscar that everybody knows and loves.
