Audi TT Good for Only 4 Stars at Euro NCAP Safety Tests

A new year comes along with revised Euro NCAP safety tests and the Audi TT had the honor of being the first car tested under the tougher 2015 rating rules. But as the latest tests show, better safety ratings were not that popular on Audi’s New Year’s resolutions list.

Euro NCAP waited for 2015 to come before playing Santa with carmakers and bring a new set of rules to judge the level of safety on new car models. There are also updated crash test dummies and revised test procedures, as it follows.

To make things even harder for 5-star safety aspiring manufacturers, a new full-width rigid barrier frontal test has been added and for the first time in any European crash test, it must be done with crash test dummies replicating a small female driver and a rear seat passenger.

In addition, Euro NCAP also introduced the so-called “oblique pole side impact test protocol” which evaluates the car’s behavior and level of safety if it were to hit a pole at an angle, instead of head-on.

According to Euro NCAP officials, “the Audi TT achieved four stars overall, amongst other reasons due to lack of latest advanced technologies such as autonomous emergency braking.

The full report says the passenger compartment of the TT remained stable in the offset deformable barrier impact, while dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger crash mannequins.

Regarding child protection, tests revealed that there is not sufficient space in the rear seats to use Audi’s recommended child restraints when the front seats are in the positions needed to assess adult occupant protection, but the Audi TT scored maximum points for its protection of the 3-year old dummy.

Overall, the Audi TT’s safety ratings were the following: 81% for adult occupant protection, 68% for child occupant, 82% for pedestrian protection and only 64% for its safety assist systems. Along with the new TT, Euro NCAP also tested the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro and the Renault Traffic, each receiving 3-star ratings, since they share the same platform.
