After the RL was phased out in 2012, Honda’s luxury division replaced its flagship sedan with the RLX in 2013. Available as a hybrid model too, the 2014 Acura RLX is the subject of the automaker’s latest call back operation and the reason for this is a case of web eye.
Most of the time, “automotive cataracts” boils down to a lil’ bit of water finding its way inside the headlight cluster. Due to the heat emanated by the bulbs and the humidity inside from the H2O, the headlight’s glass will either turn yellow or start to look like it’s covered in wax paper or something.
But the Acura recall covering the 2014 and 2015 model year RLX isn’t about that common problem. The Honda-owned luxury automaker forwarded a statement which explains that the “Jewel Eye” headlight clusters’ reflective film backing material inside may delaminate prematurely.
Because of this problem, illumination levels won’t suffice if the delaminating happens, resulting in a vehicle that’s no longer conforming to the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 regarding lamps, reflective devices and associated lighting equipment fitted to a passenger vehicle.
As such, approximately 9,700 units of the Acura RLX are due a free of charge replacement of their headlight units. Fortunately, no crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue. Owners are recommended to contact Acura at 800-382-2238 and select option 4 for more info on this recall.
