Since most of the production process for the new Mazda2 hatchback takes place in Thailand, Mazda has decided the 2014 edition of the Thailand International Motor Expo taking place at the end of the month is the perfect venue to launch the all-new Mazda2 subcompact sedan. Usually, these small 4-door cars are rather ugly, but the new 2 model looks nice, like a shrunken 6 with bubbly personality.
In terms of design, it's pretty much the same car as the normal hatchback from the headlights to the back doors. The distinctive KODO look of the headlights and a large chromed grille give this relatively cheap car a premium look. After that, the proportions of a typical subcompact sedan start to come into affect, ending with a small but practical boot accessible via gooseneck hinged hatch.

Depending on the market, power will come from a choice of either a new 1.5-liter diesel that Mazda has just introduced or different output versions of the familiar 1.5-liter Skyactiv petrol engine.

The only photo we have of the interior seems to suggest it will offer the same floating screen on the dash, leather seats and fake carbon trim as the supermini hatchback. The shape of the gear stick also indicates a 6-speed automatic will be made available.

Its main competitors are going to be the Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio and Nissan Almera. In Asian markets, Honda has been doing rather well with its new City sedan and the affordability of the Hyundai Accent is also a forte. However, the driving experience offered by all modern Mazda models is known for being superior to any of its Japanese competitors.
