This just in from the NHTSA watchdogs: roughly 900,000 cars manufactured by the Chrysler Group are being recalled in two separate campaigns for problems that may lead to vehicle fire. So what are the faults that led to these huge safety recalls?
Starting with the least populous of the two, the auto giant informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency that an estimated 437,000 vehicles from the 2011, 2012 and 2013 model years are being called back to relocate a sub-standard electrical connection.
After an investigation and three cases of overheating wiring harnesses for the sideview mirror, engineers found out that an electrical connector that supplies power to the mirror may be affected in wet climates, leading to overheating or a potential vehicle fire. Those three cases appeared to be localized in Canada and are related to winter driving conditions.
As such, those 437,000 units of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 model year Jeep Wrangler are being recalled. Service technicians are instructed to shift the mirror's power feed to another source, while the existing connection will be equipped with a protective shield.
In addition to that, 2011 to 2014 model year cars equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, coming in the form of the Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Charger, Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee are being called back for a problem with the alternator.
According to the manufacturer, cars equipped with electric hydraulic steering and the vee six mill suffer from a defect with the 160-amp alternator that may lead to failure of the component. Chrysler informs that this condition may result to vehicle stalling or even fire, with the automaker aware of a single accident potentially related to this glitchy alternator condition.
