AMG Ballpoint Pen Makes SLS V8 Engine Sounds

We've just stumbled upon a little gem of a video, the only one on Youtube that details one of the weirdest things ever made by the Mercedes-AMG folks. It's a V8… ballpoint pen.

Press the button and the small speaker located on top makes a sound very similar to the SLS AMG, which was the coolest car Mercedes had at the time when this product was made.

We did quite a bit of searching and found that the product is still actually available through the Mercedes-Benz Classic Store and it's kind of cheap at just 10 euros. With the dollar being so strong right now, we'd buy 10 of them and give them to all our friends for their birthdays.

Here's how the company pitches the pen: "Ballpoint pen – elegant soft grip finish featuring the 'Mercedes-Benz Museum' logo. As a special highlight you can hear the original V8 engine sound when you push the button. "

We've been able to track down an older article which says this piece has the codename B66055608 and was introduced in 2011. Production was supposed to be limited to only 5,000 pieces which makes you wonder why they are still available 4 years later.

Want to know more about the car this pen is imitating?

Of course you do. The SLS AMG was introduced in 2010 as a successor to the SLR which was developed with McLaren. Its power came from a naturally aspirated 6,208cc V8. Known internally as the M159, this unit produces 571 PS (563 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lbf-ft) of torque.

From 2012, the numbers were bumped to 591 PS for the AMG GT while a year later the hardcore Black Series model came out with 631 PS. Compared to the engines used by the C63 at the time, the SLS unit had a new intake system, valve train and camshafts, plus flow-optimised tubular steel headers.

So knowing that, what would you do with a pen that makes V8 sounds? Well, how about using it to draw up a sketch of the SLS itself, like the guy in the second video we're showing you did.
