This crazy idea came by after the Philippines got struck by the Ketsana typhoon in 2009, submerging much of Manila and terminating traffic for days in row. The company that’s about to put this thing in production is called H2O Technologies and what you see in the adjacent photo is called the Salamander.
That’s because the rickshaw does the same thing as the salamanders, goes both on land and on water. And it also does it in full electric mode if you tick the box for such a power plant.
According to Top Gear Philippines, the Salamander can be had with either a 5kW electric motor or a 250 cc gasoline engine to turn the rear wheels or a propeller sticking out from the differential.
Although it’s a prototype, you can see the whole body is made out of molded fiberglass, including the lower part which is watertight, has a modern face, vents and even doors.
There are no other details at the moment other than the fact it’s able to carry six people (although a bit cramped) and can face the water pretty good. The company plans to put it out in production some day and sell if for around Php 280,000 ($6,345).
Sadly, there’s no date to when it will start being manufactured, as H2O Technologies hasn’t found an interested investor yet.
