Apple Offered a Deal to Former Top Gear Crew, But they Went to Amazon Instead

You know what’s bigger than the automotive industry? The fantastic world of entertainment, that's what. Sure, selling a luxury car can become difficult for some, but driving that car and making people want to drive one too, now that’s the real deal. Therefore, the magic Top Gear team was never going to be left behind, of course, it was always a matter of the highest bidder.

In a recent report, Variety claims that Apple is said to have made an unprecedented bid to secure the stars of “Top Gear” when they left the BCC scene earlier this summer. As you may well know, the biggest bidder was Amazon Prime, thus getting the 3+1 crew to build up a three-year new car show. But how big was that sum to win against a giant such as Apple? Well, how about £160 million ($246.3 million) in total for 36 episodes over three years?

Put it this way, Jeremy Clarkson alone is earning £9.6 million ($14,780,352 at the current exchange rate) a year. We’re talking about some serious amount of cash not even the greatest television hosts dream of, yet this happy fellows managed to seal the deal. Just so you can make a picture about their income, imagine the three could probably buy the cars they have on each episode right after they drive them in front of the cameras.

Apple was not good enough, although we have seen crazy deals the technology giant has sealed before. Just think of Dr. Dre’s Beats partnership through which Apple did not just take over the company, but even kept the rapper and Jimmy Iovine. Sure, such a business came at a price, $3 billion to be more precise.

Getting back to the Top Gear offer, according to the source, it’s part of a bigger plan the Cupertino-based company has in mind that involves taking a big step into the world of entertainment. Hollywood, you’d better watch out.
