Apple iCar Test Mule Captured on Video in California, Takes the Form of a Dodge Minivan

We don't know if it will come pre-installed with the latest U2 album, but we do believe this is a test mule for the so-called Apple iCar, captured for the very first time on video in Palo Al, California.

Rumors of the so-called iCar have been rampant for many years, but it looks like it's finally happening. The makers of the iPhone and iMac are starting a new business where they will fight directly with Elon Musk's Tesla Motors brand. Of course, this being Apple, things will be done rather differently, with a minimalist approach to design and strong focus on autonomous driving.

Recent reports suggest the company founded by Steve Jobs is headhunting for specialists of an altogether different nature, good at making cars, not menus and gorilla glass. But let's get back to the video. It's only 25 seconds long, but that's enough to see the underpinnings of a Dodge Grand Caravan minivan that's been dotted with an array of sensors. There are undoubtedly panoramic cameras that are going to be turn the iCar into a self-driving wonder.

You may also notice there are measuring sensors attatched to the rear wheels, though those are pretty normal for any prototype car these days.

Of course, Apple isn't the only company trying to make you let go of the wheel. Mercedes has famously let an S-Class loose on a pre-determined urban route, while Audi's A7 drove itself to the 2015 CES about a month ago. Nissan, the company responsible for the Leaf EV, also wants a self-driving car by 2020 and let's not forget about Google, folks!

Apple's current Vice President of product design is Steve Zadesky used to work as an engineer for Ford and the company also hired Johann Jungwirth from Mercedes-Benz last year. Project Titan, as the car is reportedly called internally, is currently being worked on by several hundred people, so it could be ready by 2017 or so.
