As part of an agreement between Nissan and two of Spain’s biggest cities, three Leaf and e-NV200 taxis were recently delivered. This marks another step in the company’s efforts to meet up Europe’s plans of increasing the quality of air and reducing pollution by promoting environmental-friendly transportation.
Madrid received its first Nissan Leaf taxi at an event held in Puerta del Sol where the Zero Kilometer point is located. This place is the beginning point for the measurement of kilometer markers on all Spanish roads. Another Spanish city to partner up with the Japanese auto maker is Barcelona. The city is also the one where the e-NV200 plant is located, so it was only natural the first taxi produced here to be used in the city.
Nissan’s director of Electric Vehicles Jean-Pierre Diernaz has welcomed Spain’s decision, stating this is not only important for the city and its citizens, but also for the drivers who will save up money using the EVs.
“Declining air quality levels are a top concern across Europe and it’s great to see Madrid and Barcelona taking such positive steps in improving air quality through the incorporate of Nissan’s all-electric cars into their taxi fleets,” Diernaz said in a statement.
As to Nissan’s Leaf car, you’ll want to know it’s currently the world’s best selling highway-capable all-electric car, with global sales of almost 140,000 units as of September 2014.
The leading markets are the United States with almost 64,000 units delivered, Japan with over 45,000 units, and Europe with more than 28,000. The European market is led by Norway with over 11,000 new units and the UK, with over 6,000 units delivered.
