Now that Bentley has brought the Gran Convertible project back on the table and is currently in the process of taking a production decision on the Mulsanne convertible, we must also talk about the possibility of a coupe.
Did we say “coupe”? Sorry, we meant Grand Coupe, as this is the designation that would fit a two-door incarnation of the Mulsanne.
We’ll remind you the Volkswagen Group both stirred and shook the crowds at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week with its two lavish Grand Tourers, namely the Bentley Grand Convertible and the Audi A9 Prologue coupe, which may or may not enter production itself. What you see here is a bit of a melange between the two, coming from image manipulator Theophilus Chin.
We’ll start with the Gran Convertible, a project for which Crewe is currently awaiting public reaction - while they’ve shown the concept in LA, it is up to the public now to express their desire for such a niche model.
Alas, Durheimer was transferred to Audi afterwards and his replacement, Wolfgang Schreiber, saw the questionable demand as a reason to put the project an on indefinite hold.
Now that the executive is back at the helm of Bentley and Bugatti, he wants to see the Mulsanne range flourish. Still, it’s not just the demand that might be working against him - the VW Group has recently toned down its aggressive niche expansion strategy that was supposed to see it become the No. One carmaker (sales volume) by 2018, due to the fact that the plan risked affecting profits.
Then again, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe are out there as a testament that the elites need their two-door automobiles. Even so, the new-age Azure and Brooklands could arrive as limited editions, so you may not be able to purchase one even if you have the financial side to back up the acquisition.
