BMW 1 Series Facelift Will Get LED Headlights Next Year

BMW is currently working on a much needed facelift for its cheapest model in the range, the 1 Series. The googly-eyed design of the front fascia will hopefully be gone and other interesting upgrades will also be introduced next year, when the car will be unveiled, amongst them LED headlights.

At the moment, the hatchback can be had with either halogen or xenon lamps, being basically one of the few models in the line-up that can still be had with the former option. That’s all going to change according to insider info, once the facelift comes out.

The only problem is that we never saw that kind of headlights on the prototypes caught off-guard by our spy photographers. At best, they were fitted with what looked like xenons but the truth of the matter is that LEDs can also be had with lenses. That means that one or more of the prototypes might’ve had this kind of technology on board and we just didn’t notice.

Engine line-up will also be changed

Apart from this bombshell, the F20 LCI (life cycle impulse) model will also bring a couple of important changes under the bonnet and by that we meant a host of B-family plants.

All cars that are currently using older PSA-BMW mills will be from now on using the new B38/B37/B47 engines that have been slowly introduced on other cars in the BMW and MINI range.

That means the 114d, 114i, 116i, 118i will be dropping the old 1.6-liter inline fours for new 3-cylinder 1.5-liter or 2-liter 4-cylinder alternatives. You’ll know them from the MINI Cooper and 2 Series models.

Other interesting upgrades will include LED fog lights along with Adaptive Cruise Control, options that were previously unavailable.

The production is slated to begin next March with the car to be presented at the Geneva Motor Show before reaching showrooms worldwide (excepting USA, of course).
