BMW worked hard to grow the eco-friendly image its i cars have these days. They signed various contracts with all sorts of institutions and invested heavily in marketing campaigns. Apparently, the German company considers that Formula E is still a winning bet, and they will continue their collaboration with the championship in 2016 as well.
According to a new press release, the Bavarians will still provide support cars for the Formula E races that are set to kick off in Beijing, China, on October 17 later this year. Being the Official Vehicle Partner comes with some perks too.

The i8 will be used as a safety car, and that means that everyone watching the races will get to admire its shape when on track. That being said, it could draw some potential customers as probably only those really interested in the well-being of the planet as a whole will be watching.

Then there’s the i3 that will be used as a Medical Car, being fitted with all the required equipment to do so, just like it was in the previous season. The line-up is completed by two BMW C Evolution electric scooters and, of course, the BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid, the first hybrid ever to be sold under the blue and white roundel.

“BMW has been involved in Formula E from the word go. It signed up as the Official Vehicle Partner to supply the BMW i8 Safety Car and BMW i3 Medical Car. And this commitment has given the company a platform on which to press its claim as a leader in electric mobility. In 2014 and 2015 we laid the foundations for a successful partnership, and it’s one which will continue into the second season of the championship in 2015/2016,” said Jörg Reimann, Vice President BMW Brand Experience.

As for the competition itself, you should know that it will become an open championship in this second season. What that means is that unlike on the inaugural run, when all cars were identical, this time eight of the ten teams will use their own technology to try and claim the number one spot. That means that it won’t be all down to the driver this time, but technology will have a say in the outcome.
