This weekend’s DTM race was off to a promising start before it even began. During the qualifying rounds, Bruno Spengler managed to finish first, claiming the Pole Position for BMW, the first one so far this season.
The difference at the top was of just four thousandths of a second, the BMW Team MTEK driver managing to post a lap of 48.280 seconds around the 2.3-kilometer long street circuit. The second placed driver was Christian Vietoris from Mercedes.

However, the race on Sunday had a different outcome, with Bruno finishing third behind Robert Wickens and Christian Vietoris, both from Mercedes-Benz. However, the Canadian won in style, thanks to a brilliant duel in the penultimate lap against Mattias Akstrom from Audi.

This was the 39th time Bruno finished on the podium in his DTM career and his first since the second place we achieved last year in Moscow. The only other BMW driver that finished in the points was Maxime Martin that came in 10th for Team RMG, scoring one point.

Martin Tomczyk, Antonio Felix da Costa and Marco Wittmann all were out of the point finishing 11th, 12th and 13th. Tom Blomqvist, the rookie of the bunch, came in 16th.

“The Norisring is quite a special track, where experienced drivers can really step up their game. This is precisely what Bruno Spengler did in qualifying, as his pole lap was absolutely perfect. In the race, Bruno showed real fighting spirit, attacking at the right time and, deservedly, achieved his first podium of the season for us. Our 2012 DTM champion performed very strongly today,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director, after the Sunday race.

Martin Tomczyk showed great fighting spirit in the Sunday race, managing to pull a strong comeback from starting on the 21st place on the grid. He managed to finish 11th, just missing out of the points in the final laps.

Bad luck struck for Augusto Farfus once again, the Brazilian driver being forced to retire for the third time this season due to a collision that wasn’t his fault.

The next two races will take place on 11th and 12th of July on the Zandvoort circuit in the Netherlands.
