The BMW X5 xDrive40e is definitely a stepping stone in the history of the Bavarian brand, being the first plug-in hybrid model sold under the main brand. Up until its launch, the only such cars in the line-up used to wear an ‘i’ on the boot.
Picking the SUV to show the world what their plug-in hybrid tech is capable of is no coincidence either as the Germans wanted to jump on the wave of popularity this segment is experiencing right now. We also have a hunch they wanted to prove that no matter the body style, they can still make a hybrid that is enjoyable in all situations.

Today they launched a new set of photos that, this time, focus on what makes the xDrive40e model different from all other X5s. Therefore, the shots were taken centered on all sorts of details both in and outside the car.

Special attention was dedicated to the driving modes that are different than on a regular BMW. On the hybrid SUV, you get Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and Save battery mode along with the Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes.

These will allow you to either use the combustion engine to recharge the battery, to use it as efficiently as possible or drive the car in EV mode alone. The instrument cluster is different too, under the rev-counter having a new display that shows when the battery is being charged or depleted.

Right between the speedometer and the RPM counter you get a new indicator that shows how much electric range you have at any time as well as how long it will take to recharge the batteries.

On the outside, the only things that set the car apart are the ‘extra’ fuel cap on the front left fender and the eDrive logo on the tailgate. Coupled with the new wheel style, they make the xDrive40e what it is.

Under the bonnet, the powertrain is made up of a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque coupled to an electric motor making 113 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The maximum combined output climbs to 313 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).

We won’t bore you with more technical details for now and let you enjoy the new photos. For more info on the X5 xDrive40e, check out the original article dedicated to the plug-in hybrid.
