BMW created the 2 Series Active Tourer to appeal to a certain demographic. According to the company, the aim of the new model is to attract new customers to the brand. Their estimates say that over 75% of the people buying this car will be new to the BMW brand. That’s a good thing.
However, to appeal to all those new customers, the line-up must include a wide range of choices and the 2 Series Active Tourer range simply wasn’t cutting it right now. There were only 3 models available, a diesel and two petrols. The entry level petrol was a 218i using a 3-cylinder engine making 136 HP. Now, BMW is doubling the choices and offering all-wheel drive.
The other diesel to be introduced in November is the 220d that will also become the range topping oil burner. Powered by a new generation 2-liter 4-cylinder B47 engine, the car will have 190 HP and 360 Nm (266 lb-ft) of torque and should return 53.4 mpg (4.4 l/100 km) combined.
On the petrol side of things, the engine used on the MINI Cooper S will be introduced on the 2 Series Active Tourer, powering the 220i. The heart of this thing is a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged unit making 192 HP and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) with overboost. The fuel consumption should sit around the 39 mpg (5.9 l/100 km) limit.
Basically, only the range topping diesel and petrol models will get it. The 220d xDrive will be using it as well as the 225i xDrive model. Both of them see a fuel consumption increase due to the added weight. Therefore, the 220d xDrive will sip 4.6 l/100 km (51.1 mpg) while the 225i xDrive will take up to 6.4 liters of petrol for each 100 km (36.7 mpg).
All new engines are EU6, raising BMW’s grand total of cars compliant with the new standard up to 250. Furthermore, you can order them right now and have them delivered by the end of the year. For now, they are only available in Europe but the US should be getting their fair share of 2 Series Active Tourer models starting next year. However, only xDrive models will be available stateside.
Two diesel engines and one petrol to expand the range
The new entry-level diesel model will be the 216d that, according to BMW, is also supposed to be the most frugal. Powered by a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine, the new car will have 116 HP and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque. According to BMW, it should return an average fuel consumption of 3.8 l/100 km (61.8 mpg). The other diesel to be introduced in November is the 220d that will also become the range topping oil burner. xDrive for most powerful models
As was promised when the car initially was launched, the 2 SAT will now get all-wheel drive as well. xDrive will be available but only on a couple of models as introducing it on the entire range would bring disappointing result consumption-wise.Basically, only the range topping diesel and petrol models will get it.
