BMW G30 5 Series Spotted Testing Next to M5 and 2016 7 Series

Interesting things must be happening at BMW these days. The engineers are almost done with the 2016 7 Series, and they are now starting to pay more and more attention to the new 5 Series.

Wearing the G30 codename, the new 5er should be getting some of the innovative stuff that will be introduced on the flagship. Just like its brother, the new sedan will have less weight to carry around to both reduce the fuel consumption but also improve the handling of the new cars.

Under the skin lies the new CLAR platform that will be the basis for all future rear-wheel drive models from the 3 Series upwards. Joining this shared architecture will be a new set of engines that are modular and more efficient.

The 5 Series will most likely get the entire new line-up of powerplants, ranging from 2-liter to 3-liter mills. Hopefully, the V8 will remain in production in the future as well, even if the current 4.4-liter N63 mill proved to be rather disappointing in terms of reliability.

As far as technology inside the cabin goes, we’ll find the new iDrive system for sure, featuring a touch-sensitive display along with the new augmented reality possibly. The weight is rumored to go down by over 200 lbs (100 kg) and that’s not just a rumor.

It’s a known fact that BMW has been struggling with the 5 Series and its weight. That’s going to be even more important when it comes to the M5, a car that is supposed to perform both on the street and off it.

In the video below, we get to see both of them out testing on the Nurburgring. It’s not the first time that has happened, but it is rather interesting that they were seemingly comparing them between each other and against a 7 Series. That could lead to a series of interesting theories.

First of all, they will have similar weights which wouldn’t be a premiere in the history of BMW. Second, we might see an M version for the 7 Series but it might not be what you think.

Officials from Bavaria have always stated that an M7 wouldn’t fit the character of BMW cars. However, an M Performance model has never been out of the question. That being said, the M770i xDrive could be a thing in the near future.

Don’t get your hopes up though as this is just a supposition at the moment. During testing phase, engineers could be trying out these cars together for a million reasons. It does sound enticing though, doesn’t it?

As for the specs the future M5 will have, we’re guessing around 600-620 HP from the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo mill that will probably be kept along. Torque should go up to around 700 Nm at the very least. With the weight reduction program and a possible xDrive system, things should get really intense.
