BMW i8 Wins 2015 World Green Car Award

The BMW i8 continues to write history, no matter what its critics say. This week the plug-in hybrid sports car from Bavaria won the 2015 World Green Car Award. This is the second time in a row BMW claimed the coveted prize.

Last year, it was the i3s turn to be recognized for its eco-friendly approach towards transportation and this year, at the New York International Auto Show, the places have been switched.

Furthermore, the i8 was also one of the finalists in the category World Luxury Car of the year, showing that an eco-friendly attitude can go hand in hand with luxury.

“I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of the team in Munich,” said Dr. Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing BMW, speaking at the Award Ceremony in New York.

“The BMW i8 represents the future with its unique lightweight construction and unrivaled connectivity. To win this award for the second year in a row shows that our BMW i products are truly leading the world,” he added.

And it truly seems so. Not too long ago, BMW announced that it doubled the production of the i8 to keep up with the demand. The factory in Leipzig where the hybrid is being assembled alongside the i3 now has an output of 20 cars a day in hopes that waiting lists will start shrinking.

Back in 2014, an average customer had to wait up to 18 months to have his i8 delivered, a period that was simply far too long, the sales numbers showing it clearly. Now, reports are coming in that that waiting time has been reduced to just four months, and it continues to drop.
