BMW Invited by Mercedes-Benz to Enter Formula 1 Again

The funniest mustache in the auto industry at the moment definitely belongs to Dieter Zetsche. However, as funny as it may seem, daring statements have made themselves heard from under it, the latest coming today, in Germany’s Sport Bild magazine.

Apparently, the publication had a sit down with Mercedes’ boss and learned a thing or two. The most important bit is a gauntlet thrown at the face of Audi and BMW.

After winning the Formula One World Championship this year, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is getting cocky. Admittedly they did dominate this year, winning almost everything there was to win but still, a little modesty wouldn’t hurt.

Getting back to the matter at hand here, it would seem like the CEO invited the company’s eternal rivals to join in and enter Formula 1. His argument? It’s only natural since the three share 80 percent of the luxury segment of the auto industry, right?

Unlike Audi, that was never a player in the F1 championship, BMW had previous experiences in the motorsport, the last such endeavor ending in 2006 with the Sauber team. Ever since then, the officials in Munich didn’t say a word about returning.

Since this year turbocharged plants were introduced, it would seem like BMW with its TwinTurbo technology would have a thing or two to prove. After all, they claim that their twin-scroll turbos are more efficient and deliver more power than anyone else’s.

Audi could also use Porsche’s expertise in the field. After all, the Stuttgart-based company is known for its praise-worthy results in Le Mans and they even said that F1 is ‘interesting’. For us, it makes no difference if it’s going to be Audi or Porsche racing as long as they do it.

For now, the three are dueling in the DTM and Mercedes is losing, badly. This year, the three pointed star manufacturer didn’t manage to win anything, BMW claiming the Team and Driver titles while Audi was declared the best manufacturer.
