The unexpected prodigy of the drag strips these days is apparently the M4 that managed to surprise us on more than one occasion. This time, it’s taking on a car that literally has twice the engine under the bonnet, a Dodge Charger SRT8.
However, it should be pointed out that the Bimmer also has two turbochargers under its bonnet to make up for the smaller block. This is a good old fashion naturally aspirated versus forced induction showdown.
The specs tell a story that seems to be slightly in the Dodge’s favor. Its 6.4-liter V8 engine is atmospheric and makes 470 HP and no less than 475 lb-ft of torque (644 Nm) allowing it to reach 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, despite being rear-wheel drive. On the other hand, it’s also pretty heavy at 4,400 lbs (1,995 kg).
The M4 however, comes with a 3-liter inline 6 engine with two Mitsubishi turbochargers that squeezes out 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. If fitted with the DCT 7-speed gearbox, the 0-60 mph sprint is done in 3.9 seconds, a tad quicker. How is that possible when there’s less power and torque available? It’s all in the weight: 3,556 lbs (1,612 kg).
Even so, you’d have to be a careful driver to make sure that your rear end doesn’t slide out when launching hard, in both cars. Who won, then? Well, I guess you’ll just have to watch the video below.
