BMW Motorrad Introduces Dynamic Brake Light for Six 2016 Models

BMW adds a new type of brake lights to some of their 2016 models and is thus upping the ante in motorcycle and road safety. A feature so far reserved for cars only, the dynamic brake lights will be offered to motorcycles as well.

The dynamic brake light is aimed at making the motorcycles better seen on the road when they are slowing down or brake in case of emergency. Unlike traditional brake lights that remain lit as long as the rider is using the brakes, the dynamic brake light blinks and has two stages.

The first stage involves blinking at a 5 Herz rate. That is five times per second, as studies revealed that this cadence is the one that attracts attention the most. So basically, the brake light of certain BMW bikes will blink from now on, instead of remaining lit for the duration of the brake.

Blinking alone occurs when the motorcycle decelerates from a speed over 50 km/h (31 mph). As the braking continues, and the speed drops under 14 km/h (9 mph), the hazard lights start flashing, too. This second stage remains turned on until the bike picks up speed once more and goes over 20 km/h (12.5 mph).

Dynamic brake light is an optional feature reserved for six models

Customers who want to get the dynamic brake light must know that this is an ex works option that works the with ABS Pro option, as part of the option “Ride Modes Pro”.

The 2016 model year R1200GS, R1200GS Adventure and S1000XR will have it on the options list, whereas the 2016 K1600GT, GTL and GTL Exclusive will have it as part of the standard trim.
