This week rumors started floating around the internet saying that BMW and Apple are going to develop a new car that will be using the American gadget manufacturer’s software and the Germans’ hardware. That’s right, the industry is changing.
The initial report came from a trusted German magazine and claimed that BMW and Apple are actually working together towards bringing out a car based on the i3 that would have next-level software on-board from Cupertino. This would then be sold under the logo of the aforementioned US-based company and, in turn, be a rival for the Google car.
Just like we explained earlier, the changes happening in the car industry at the moment tend to leave out gearboxes and conventional internal combustion engines and focus more and more on electronics and software.
The same source claimed that these EVs would be sold in the famous Apple Stores around the world and then serviced in BMW dealerships, bringing profit to both brands. Furthermore, the collaboration would help the Bavarians bring the dream of making a completely autonomous car closer to reality.
In this regard, the auto giant is already making progress, showing an i3 that can drive and park itself at this year’s CES. However, that was only a prototype and putting it into production might take a little longer. Rumor has it that the new 7 Series will have this kind of tech but we’re still waiting for official confirmation.
Getting back to the Apple-BMW duo, the latter denied any such rumors this week, officially, putting the issue to rest for now. Or did it?
Even if the two would be working together to such ends, they would still have to publicly deny it until something worth mentioning can be showed to the public.
On the other hand the duo could be discussing further means of integrating Apple devices on-board Bimmers. After all, BMW did use a lot of time and research money to integrate various apps into the iDrive infotainment system. The Germans denied that they would be interested in Apple CarPlay but that could also be an interesting theory.
