A lot of people know about BMW’s only mid-engined car they ever made so far, the M1 and they can easily recognize it on the street. However, that’s not the only car worthy of attention from the company’s past. Sure, it’s rare and beautiful but others are as well.
Take for example this one spotter for Autogespot. He stumbled upon a beautiful Alpine White M1 the other day in Sigmaringen, Germany. Of course, recognizing the rarity of the thing he started snapping photos but engulfed in the car’s allure he forgot to also take some shots of another legendary car (and possibly even rarer) parked right alongside it: an Alpina 3.0CS.

While the M1 was built in just 453 units from 1978 to 1981, the Alpina 3.0CS is even rarer, nobody knowing for sure how many were ever made. Compared to the stock model, they are also a lot faster and more desirable.

The engine has 230 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque thanks to three twin choke 40 mm Solex carburetors. Furthermore, the suspension was also changed with one done by Alpina along with the front bumper, steering wheel inside, new seats and new wheels, of course, in the typical style of the tuning company.

The 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint was done in just 7.3 seconds which was extremely impressive for the 1970s. The top speed? 143 mph (230 km/h).

On the other hand, the M1 was also impressive especially since it came around later than the New Six models. It had the legendary M88 engine under the boot and raced successfully in a plethora of series but it doesn’t look remotely as good as the E9. It’s a shame we don’t have more photos of the both of them, really.
