Does number seven in World Superbike tell you something? Well, it's time to have Carlos Checa back on a Ducati, but he's not going to dress his leathers for racing purposes. The 2011 WSBK champion will be present at Mugello for testing the 1199 Panigale R.
Checa will be at Mugello between June 30th and July 2nd, and will ride a WSBK-spec Ducati 1199 Panigale R, replacing Luca Scassa, the rider originally signed for the test. Scassa, however, broke his collar bone recently and is unable to fulfill his test riders duties.
While we thought that Borgo Panigale's top test rider Michele Pirro would be at the helm of the Panigale R, it looks like he has other duties, so Checa stepped in.
While Biaggi's modest goal was to score at least as many points as Bayliss, his performance at Misano was way better. He did not battle at the top of the pack, but he finished in an amazing sixth position in both races, and already has another go at Sepang, later this year.
Checa, who is also the emblem of the "Ducati Riding Experience" will take to the track at Misano this week, but says that he plans to remain a retired rider, and will not make a comeback.
In mid-October 2013 Checa announced his retirement. The Spaniard, who was 41 then, had just suffered a hard fall in Istanbul, Turkey, resulting in a fractured pelvis and the need to rest for the remainder of the season. Checa then decided it was time to hang his racing leathers and put an end to a two-decade career.
He is still involved with Ducati and never lost contact with the sport, and we dare dream to see him get a wildcard ride this year.
