The smallest car in Chevrolet's worldwide lineup has recently sold its 1 millionth unit, which is not bad at all for a car introduced as the Beat in India in late 2009. In just five years, the Spark nameplate became available in over 71 markets around the world.
However, most enthusiasts of the quirky city car will ask at this moment: "Hey, what about the previous generations?" Well, dear Spark fans, the 1998 to 2005 first-gen and 2005 to 2009 second-generation are actually Chevrolet-badged variants of Daewoo's Matiz. Only after GM bought the South Korean brand the Spark rightfully became a real Chevrolet model.
With that bit of history out of the way, let's turn our attention back to the outgoing Spark. Also available as an electric vehicle, the nameplate is selling like crazy especially in South Korea, the United States and Mexico. US sales of the urban runaround model are up 10 percent year-to-date, while 9 percent of Spark customers are youngsters under 35 years old.
“Our small cars – Spark, Sonic and Cruze – attract more new car buyers to Chevrolet than any other vehicles in the lineup, with more than 60 percent of buyers never owning a Chevy before,” explains Alan Batey, executive VP of the golden bowtie automaker.
If you want one, that will be $13,095 without freight charge for the basic LS Manual trim level. But if you want to go all out with the optioning, there's the $17,360 2015 Chevrolet Spark 2LT Automatic. Even though it's petite and not that big of an investment, the Spark boasts with OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi connectivity, a MyLink media system with a 7-inch touchscreen and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone users.
