Should Chinese car companies be allowed to copy every important design made by West? We think not, but there doesn't seem to be a way to stop them, especially as local authorities are turning a blind eye to copyright infringement in more important industries, like smartphones and tables.
We've just discovered a spy photo of a large sedan called the JAC Refine A6, currently testing in China. It's the largest sedan ever made by this company and is based on a concept they showed at the Beijing Auto Show back in April. Yet by transitioning from concept to production car, the Refine A6 seems to have adopted way too many features from the real A6, the one made by Audi.
The front end features a hexagon grille and headlights that are nearly identical to the pre-facelift A6 with Xenon Plus. But the interior is an even more blatant clone of the A6. It features MMI-like controllers, the same shape of dash and a gear lever shaped just like Audis in the 2000s. In the back, the center armrest is remarkably similar to the one in the A8L and the fake wood trim is very clearly made from bad plastic.
What's funny is that the Chinese firm chose to copy the A6 without using the engines Audi buyers expect. The JAC Refine A6 is a huge car, measuring almost 5 meters in length and featuring a 2915mm. So, care to guess what engine it uses? A V6? No, a 1.5-liter turbo… like a MINI Cooper.
They say it makes 170 hp and 250 Nm, but for some reason we don't want to believe them.
JAC Motors is not at its first such offense. You might remember them from back in 2012, when they copied Ford's design for the F-150 pickup, the best selling vehicle in America. JAC reportedly wanted to make a cool and inexpensive truck for customers in China, Africa and South America. But they went about it completely the wrong way, offering a 2.8-liter diesel engine with just 108 horsepower.
A total of 203,498 JAC passenger cars were sold in China in 2013, making it the 22nd largest company operating there on a volume basis. They also make large buses and trucks. Their Sunray van has also been accused by Mercedes for being a clone of their Sprinter.
