Citroen Weighs In the Old and New With the C4 Aircross at Auto Shanghai 2015

PSA Peugeot Citroen never settled for only showing the C4 Aircross in Geneva, so they thought the crossover's presence at Auto Shanghai 2015 would benefit the brand's sales-improving efforts.

We should find out later if that tactic had any success when the company details yearly sales in China. For now, we paid the Citroen stand a visit in Shanghai and greeted the C4 Aircross crossover. We're basically looking at the same car presented in Geneva two years ago, and if I remember right, the car was underpinned by the same platform used by the Mitsubishi ASX.

You might also know the C4 Aircross from its Peugeot correspondent, the 4008, but Auto Shanghai provided an interesting bridge between old and new for Citroen.

While the C4 Aircross' production will be discontinued in 2016, the French group strategically unveiled the 2015 Citroen Aircross compact SUV prototype. Yes, that's the replacement for the aging C4 Aircross, a concept that is touted as the Cactus' bigger brother.

It's also a great opportunity to put under magnifying glass what the new car will bring over the old. The C4 Aircross featured a good-looking body kit, despite being overdone here and there.

In terms of engine options, two petrol engines served the crossover - a 1.6-liter 115 HP unit and a 2.0-liter 150 HP mill. The diesel department was represented by an 110 HP unit along with a more powerful 150 HP one, and that was pretty much it.

Nonetheless, the Aircross prototype comes with a 1.6-liter turbo engine good for 220 HP, but it also gets a boost from a rear-mounted electric motor that adds another 95 HP to the equation. Combined, you get a lot of power, considering Citroen's output-restricted engines that rarely go over the 120 HP mark.

Despite no word on a future production model generated by the prototype, all we can hope is that the new model will grab a lot of styling cues from the Aircross study, as design is without doubt a strong point for Citroen.
