Create Your Own Dakar Scene with Yamaha's Mind-Boggling Papercraft Models

With only hours separating us from the start of the Dakar Rally 2015, Yamaha is delivering one more refined, exquisite, hard-to-put-together piece of marketing contraptions: not one, but two Iwata machines, in cross-country race-ready trim, complete with rider… and scenery. If you enjoyed their latest “Rossi’s Corkscrew Pass on Stoner” papercraft wonder, prepare for something that equally astonishing.

The principle remains the same: users printing the PDF documents created by Yamaha, cutting, folding and gluing them together in a special way, with the resulting piece being a true work of art well worth being set on display with pride. The complete papercraft model is 86 cm (33.8 “) tall, 90 cm (35.4”) wide and 70 cm (27.5”) deep, so you’d better have a place ready for it before you start printing and cutting.

Two iconic machines in one papercraft model

Just like the MotoGP papercraft model sport, the rally-raid one sports two motorcycles. The first one is the 1995 Paris-Dakar XTZ850R machine and symbolizes the past glory, a bike whose engine is derived from the TDM850, and a solid proof that in certain cases, Yamaha’s stock trim power plants are worthy of Dakar action.

The other one is a most modern beast, the 2014 YZ450F, derived from the bike Stefan Everts rode to no less than 4 Motocross World Championship victories in a row between 2003 and 2006. If the number 1 on the racing plate of this bike looks familiar, you should know that in 2014, the top Yamaha bike was ridden by 5-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres, who was the 2013 winner (hence the number) and who finished the rally in the 4th position. He has since moved to the Cars class with Peugeot.

Yamaha’s hopes for the 2015 edition of the Dakar rally lie with Olivier Pain, 3rd last year, aided by Alessandro Botturi and Michael Metge. Other noted riders on Yamaha machinery this year are Juan Garcia Pedrero and Frans Verhoeven.

If the hangovers after the New Year’s Eve parties are gone and you feel like you can handle a sharp blade, you can download the all-new Yamaha Motor Sports World: Rallying papercraft model and get busy. We’ll let you know about the progress of the Dakar 2015.
