Dutch Couple Travel 80,000-Mile Journey Around the World in a Ford Model T

Some well-heeled people donate money for all sorts of causes, others get involved in activities all around the planet. Then there are those people who will find a way to complete their love for others with their passion. This is what Dirk and Trudy Regter from the Netherlands did when they decided they will go around the world in a 1915 Ford Model T to support a worldwide working organization for orphan children.

Their adventure started two and a half years ago in the Louwman Musem in The Hague in Holland and the first leg of their trip took them from their home country to Cape Town, South Africa, a 160 days trip counting for 15,000 miles. US and Canada followed the next year, as the second leg of the world tour was through 22 states and from the west to the east coast of Canada. This part took them another 180 days and they covered 17,000 miles.

South America was next as the two adventurers would see another 16,000 miles on the road spending further 180 days during the third leg. This year is going to be a “sabbatical year” since the two decided they want to spend some time with their 4 grandchildren.

The Regters are still 30,000 miles short from achieving their goal, but they are planning to finish it the next two years, when the trip will continue through New Zealand, Australia, Mongolia and via Central Europe back to Holland.

During the 50,000 miles they have covered so far, the Dutch road trippers visited and supported various projects run by the international children’s aid organization SOS-Children’s Villages. According to the initiative’s website, by means of a worldwide sponsorship campaign they are helping to ensure that children who have no parents will get a loving home.
