Nope, it's not a supercar that did that, but a student-built electric vehicle
You read that right, the record is not the result of assiduous work of a supercar brand, but a team of students from the University of Stuttgart.
They go by the name of GreenTeam and according to Electric Autosport, managed to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 1.779 seconds using a car they developed to race in Formula Student competitions. The attempt took place at the JadeWeserAirport located in the Northwestern part of Germany.
This is a big day for EVs, so let's find out more about the team's 100 kW vehicle. It uses four motors and a 6.62 kWh battery package to put them in motion, but the trick is also weight-related.
I mean, the prototype's weight was kept at just 160 kg (352.7 lbs), which results in a power-to-weight ratio of 1,6 kg/kW. Also, it can execute burnouts that can make muscle cars drown in jealousy.
Anyway, to put things into perspective here, Formula 1 racers have a power-to-weight ratio of 1,0 kg/kW while the Porsche 918 Spyder stands at 2,50 kg/kW, so the student-built EV packs serious awesomeness. Sure, the track-oriented EV needed a couple of warm-up attempts, but as some of you might know, for the record to stand, the car has to run in both directions.
In any case, the record will be confirmed by Guinness World Records in the next couple of weeks, which means the gauntlet has been thrown. Who's brave enough to pick it up?
