Futuristic Volkswagen Corrado Has GTE Concept Styling Cues

In the late 1980s, Volkswagen sold the Corrado G60, which was said to reach 60 miles per hour in 7.3 seconds. That's pretty impressive stuff, considering the Pro_Cee'd GT, which Kia launched recently, takes about 7.5 seconds to do the same thing.

Handling wasn't too bad either. The coupe was front-wheel drive, but had responsive steering, a direct manual gearbox and produced lovely supercharger sounds from the 1.8-liter engine. You could also order it with the legendary VR6.

Of course, we all know that the Corrado is dead, and only die-hard Volkswagen fans remember what it looks like today. That's something we want to change by showing you these lovely renderings of a futuristic yet simple 2-door created by Theophilus Chin.

The images are based on two concepts, the Audi Sport quattro of 2014 and the new Volkswagen Sport Coupe GTE that was shown in Geneva back in March. Weirdly enough, there's a way in which all this is connected. The concept car uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter TSI V6 direct-injection engine that cranks out 300 hp. People have been demanding that the famous VR6 engine, which the Corrado was available with, be used again.

Of course, in this day and age a 300 horsepower six-cylinder engine hardly seems impressive – you get that from a Golf R (2.0 TSI). So Volkswagen might want to add hybrid tech and turn the Corrado into the ultimate performance coupe with a green side.

Such ambitious projects are something we would have expected from Ferdinand Piech, who left Volkswagen's chairman of the supervisory board position a few days ago. Still, Martin Winterkorn loves hybrids, so he might like the idea.

Demand for pure coupes has been decreasing steadily as more people jump onto the SUV bandwagon. Up until only recently, the future of both the Beetle and the Scirocco looked very uncertain. However, Volkswagen is considering a crossover with a sloped roof, like the BMW X6, and we think that the Corrado name will fit it rather well.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
