Everybody knows Ken Block plays around with a Ford Fiesta rallycross car and occassionaly with the only all-wheel drive classic Ford Mustang in the world, but if he ever switches to driving Czech cars, Skoda has the right car for the job. It's based on the new Fabia, but replaces the lazy engines usually installed under that bonnet with a powerful 1.6-liter turbo.
This is the Fabia R Concept, revealed today ahead of its official debut later in the week at the Essen Motor Show. When it's ready to officially compete, the R5 is likely to replace the current S2000 racer. It's as green as a poison dart frog and as mean as a pit bull terrier, yet its based on a family supermini which you see every day on Europe's roads.
Just as the FIA regulations dictate, the Fabia R5 will be powered by a 1.6-liter turbo gearbox, which is connected to a five-speed gearbox and McPherson strut suspension. It will also have a full roll cage and stripped down interior, though in keeping with the law of the rally land, weight will be at least 1,230 kg (2,711 lbs).
“The world premiere of the Fabia R 5 Concept Car gives an insight into the future of rallying at ŠKODA,” said Skoda Motorsport Director Michal Hrabánek. “The Fabia R 5 is scheduled to be homologated by mid-2015.”
While we let Ken Block decide if he wants to ditch Ford for Skoda, we'll tell him that the Essen Motor Show will also mark the German market debut of the new Fabia Combi and a few special special Monte Carlo editions of the Rapid Spaceback, Yeti and Citigo. There will also be a few cool show cars, namely the Yeti Xtreme, CitiJet and Rapid Spaceback Red & Grey Collection.
