When it comes to riding you all know what they say: protection is the thing on which we spend a lot of money, though we hope to never get to use it. Now, if you caught my drift, you also understood that good protection shows how good it really is only when the going gets tough. In those times of need you’ll be glad you went the extra mile and got yourself better riding gear.
Things aren’t that different when we are talking about the very machines we ride and the safety-focused accessories we buy. If riding hard and performing stunts which are somehow off the daily commuting list comes into the discussion, the need of being well-geared is even greater. Chances are that things go out of hand pretty often, and testing how fragile human beings are is one thing we all could do better off without.

Roll cages can really save a life

Motorcycles flipping over have certain chances of hitting the fallen rider as they tumble to the ground, but when riding ATVs or SxSs these odds rise spectacularly. When talking side-by-side vehicles, good chairs, good seat belts, a good helmet and a sturdy roll cage are mandatory if you want to make it in one piece after a hard crash. The video below shows just how easily can things go wrong and how small is the difference between telling the story in the evening and your family preparing your funeral.

Even though it’s a rather gruesome task, you could watch the video more times and try to imagine the outcome in a scenario where the roll cage would give way after the initial impact with the ground or if it was missing altogether.

Some would say that nobody is that stupid as to attempt to jump an SxS without a roll cage, but real life examples are there to prove them wrong. However, in this case, it looks like Polaris has done a good job with this RZR, as the driver was unharmed after this extreme crash. A bit shaken maybe, but a thousand times better than the best shape he’d have been in should Polaris have cut some corners in making and testing the RZR.

As to the causes of the crash, we’ll let you do the investigations, as we’re no stunt riders. Still it looks like the guy could have used the throttle all the way until his rear wheels left the ground…
