The Spaniard lost control of his McLaren-Honda F1 car and hit a wall while exiting turn three of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya at high speed, but McLaren officials released a statement saying the two-time champion only suffered a concussion, therefore avoiding other injuries, despite accusing headaches for 10 minutes after the crash and not being able to exit the car.

McLaren did not share information on what might have caused the unfortunate accident, but did say that the F1 driver went off the track at turn three and hit the wall on the inside of the circuit with the right-hand side of his car.

The Turn Three corner is known as one of Formula 1’s most difficult corners to negotiate and although the car was not badly damaged, engineers will perform a thorough check of the gearbox and power unit systems.

Fernando Alonso will remain in hospital overnight as a precaution, but otherwise the Spaniard is safe and will most likely be able to get back behind the wheel in no time, pushing even harder for victories. The former Ferrari driver, now replaced by Sebastian Vettel, is held in high regard by Formula 1 fans and staff.

Alonso has won 32 races in his 13-year career and won the drivers' championship title two times, allowing him secure the sixth position on the all-time list.
