Ferrari Showdown: F12 Berlinetta Takes on 599 GTO on the Drag Strip

The one thing we can’t get our heard around right now is why would you want to drag race a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta if you’re driving a 599 GTO. That’s something that has been haunting us since this morning when we saw the video below.

In it you are going to observe what happens when two stock Ferraris take on each other and the performance difference between them is simply staggering.

Don’t get me wrong, the 599 GTO is one hell of a fast car, Ferrari themselves once saying that it’s their fastest road-going model back in the day. And the numbers prove it.

The GTO uses a 6-liter V12 that’s naturally aspirated and makes 670 HP and 620 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque. That allows the car to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds and go up to a top speed of 335 km/h (208 mph). Those figures, combined with the fact that the Italians claim the 599GTO is faster around their Fiorano track than the legendary Enzo, must’ve made the driver feel invincible.

Well, it’s not the case when you’re going up against an F12 Berlinetta. Launched two years later, the newer supercar uses a 6.3-liter V12 that is indeed derived from the one on the GTO. However, it makes 740 HP and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque and it’s supposed to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) 0.2 seconds faster.

Yes, the difference doesn’t seem to be that big but as it turns out, the F1 revised 7-speed dual-clutch transmission of the F12 might’ve played a bigger part here than expected. Furthermore, the result of the race shows just how much of a difference two years of research can bring in real life. It’s just staggering!
